What Is the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission?

The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) is the largest municipal preservation agency in the United States. Its mission is to protect the city’s architecturally, historically, and culturally significant buildings and sites by designating them as official landmarks or including them within NYC historic districts. Once designated, these properties are regulated to ensure their preservation for future generations. Today, New York City is home to more than 38,000 landmark properties, the majority of which are located within 157 historic districts and historic district extensions across all five boroughs.

Creation of the Landmarks Law in 1965

The Commission was created in 1965 following the passage of groundbreaking New York City Landmarks Lawlegislation, signed by Mayor Robert F. Wagner. This pivotal moment in NYC preservation history was a direct response to the loss of several architecturally important buildings, most famously the demolition of the original Pennsylvania Station.
